Robert A. Stein Participates in a Trial Advocacy Program

JULY/AUGUST 2014 – Robert A. Stein, founder of The Stein Law Firm, PLLC, recently returned from a trip to Boulder, Colorado, where he participated in a trial advocacy program sponsored by the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA).  The Boulder, Colorado based NITA is a non-profit organization that has been active in continuing legal education for more than four decades.  During the 10-day program, Stein gave demonstrations on opening statements, direct and cross-examination, and other aspects of trial skills, to groups of practicing attorneys who want to improve their court room skills.

“Standing in a court room and convincing 12 people to rule in one’s client’s favor is an incredible part of the experience of being a lawyer,” says Stein.  “When I stand in front of a jury, there’s a palpable sense of history that goes all the way to the nation’s Founding Fathers.  There’s nothing quite like it.”  For NITA, Stein helps colleagues improve their court room techniques – but there is something else at work, as well.  “These programs help reinforce the joy that’s inherent in the process of going to trial,” he says.  “We are the few that can stand in front of a jury and present cases that give our clients access to justice.  NITA provides a forum for sharing knowledge and experience.”

In addition to the Boulder sessions, Stein also recently participated in a similar program on behalf of NITA, at Hofstra University, where he has been teaching advocacy since 1983.  “The reason I do it is simple,” says Stein.  “First and foremost is for the joy of advocacy and the fulfillment of my obligation to my own professional mentors.”

Robert Stein Appointed ABOTA’s New Hampshire Vice Chairman

Robert Stein, founder of The Stein Law Firm, PLLC has been appointed the Vice Chairman of the New Hampshire Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). Stein, who has been involved with the organization since 1993, says his primary goal is to continue to assist ABOTA with its cause of supporting and defending the right to a jury trial—its mission since the board was founded in 1957.

“The ABOTA is made up of the country’s preeminent trial lawyers, and we’re always looking for up and comers who share the same values,” says Stein. “We also think it’s critically important to continually work to elevate the standards that trial lawyers work under, and that’s a big part of what ABOTA is about.”

ISOB Names Robert Stein State Chair

Robert A. Stein of The Stein Law Firm, PLLC has been named the New Hampshire State Chairman of the International Society of Barristers, a non-profit organization founded in 1975 to honor the great advocates of the legal profession, and to encourage younger lawyers into the specialty of advocacy.  Today, the ISOB counts only 650 members among its ranks worldwide, the smallest—and arguably most selective—of the major legal societies and associations.

As state chairman, Stein’s main responsibility will be to identify possible new members in advance of the ISOB’s annual meeting.  “The ISOB is a preeminent group of preeminent lawyers around the world,” he notes. “Being able to help uphold its mission is a task I take very seriously.”

Prior to his appointment as state chair, Stein—who has been a member of the ISOB since 1995—spent six years on its Board of Governors, and was also President of the ISOB Foundation, an arm of the ISOB that gives money to advocacy organizations that promote the jury system, among other grants.

Robert Stein Speaks at NHBA’s Midyear Meeting

As a featured speaker at the New Hampshire Bar Association’s Midyear Meeting (held March 7, 2014), The Stein Law Firm, PLLC founder,  Robert A. Stein, provided colorful commentary on a number of subjects, such as the value—and drawbacks—of email correspondence. Stein, who has been a member of the NHBA since 1975, says participating in the meeting is a great way to bring a wide variety of attorneys together under the same roof. “It’s a meeting of the minds that is hard to replicate,” says Stein, who began practicing law in 1971 and is today considered one of the region’s top litigators. “What was particularly interesting about this year’s meeting was its focus on technology and how attorneys can best use it to their advantage.”

The meeting was attended by some 400 members of the NHBA, which seeks to further the legal profession and help its members effectively serve the public.

Robert Stein Teaches Trial Advocacy Through NITA

Robert A. Stein of The Stein Law Firm, PLLC recently returned to New Hampshire from Boulder, Colorado, and Long Island, New York, where he taught trial advocacy as part of his involvement with the National Institute of Trial Advocacy, a group with which he has been involved since 1975. His recent work on behalf of NITA, which was formed by a group of lawyers, judges, and academics in the early 1970s, and whose mission it was to create advocacy courses for lawyers based on how barristers are trained in the UK, is the premier method of teach advocacy used at a wide variety of law schools and firms across the country.

“In law school, attorneys are taught about torts, criminal procedure, evidence, but it wasn’t until the 1970s and 1980s that anybody considered teaching the trial of cases or the teaching of negotiations, mediations, or motion practice,” says Stein, who has also served as a NITA Team Leader across the country. “That’s where the NITA comes in.”

At NITA, participating attorneys actually learn to try cases, says Stein, an accomplished trial lawyer who has stood in courtrooms for the majority of his career. “It’s an incredibly valuable part of an attorney’s ongoing legal education,” he says. “It’s great to be a part of it.” Stein currently serves as Team Leader of the NITA’s Northeast Regional Trial Advocacy Program, a position he has held for some two decades.
